The A618, later renamed to the 47RE, is a heavier duty version of the A518/46RE. Some internal changes were made to increase the durability such as moving from an aluminum body to steel coating the planetary carriers and additional clutch plates on some models. In 2003, a stronger successor, the 48RE, was introduced. These transmissions are available in heavy duty as well as super duty styles, both having a higher rating of torque and horsepower.
